The worrying news came on January 12. Microsoft was the victim of a cyber attack. The department has just confirmed, with certainty, the identity of the criminals, such as Midnight Blizzard - the Russian group believed to be state-run. They are also considered the same faction that interfered in the US elections in 2016. The dimensions of the attack whose mission and target were just discovered are extremely serious.
Over the recent weeks, Microsoft's security experts have been delving into an attack that coincided with a significant milestone for the company: a short spell as the most respected corporation. Recent unveilings of new findings on the official site seems to implicate the Midnight Blizzard Departure Theory. The mostly invisible group seems to have had a moment to grab information copied from Microsoft email systems, with the plan to poke around without permissions. Targets that they set are not limited to source code repositories, but also the company's internal systems as well.
Luckily, the company Microsoft gave a confirmation that its concerns not related from accessing the system of their customers that interact directly. While the company, with Bill Gates at its helm, sent out messages for people to be cautious, it followed up with urgent measures to its customers just to be sure.
To help thwart such an event in the near future, Microsoft has further added its security, coordination and packaging, investments. This added security augments existing measures as the direct response to the recent breaches which is observed in manymagnitude. However, these procedures are merely a couple of actions we have taken; our support and willingness to speak more in the future remain a priority as we shall continue the investigation.
On the one hand, the group, that is known as Midnight Blizzard, Cozy Bear, and NOBELIUS is also identified by this name. This group is principally linked to the 2016 attack on the US Democratic National Committee and the presidential elections. Considering its connection with the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, it is clear that it’s a direct counterpart of the Kremlin.
