Telegram, a
messaging app, has decided to give half of its ad money to people who run
worldwide public Channels, but only if they meet a specific requirement.
Starting
from March 31, Telegram launched a new scheme where owners of popular channels
can get half of the money made from ads displayed on their channels. This
payment is done in Toncoin (TON), which is the original digital currency of
this initiative.
In a move
announced by Pavel Durov, the head of Telegram, in February 2024, channels
seeking to make money through the newly launched Ad Platform need to have at
least a thousand followers. This was part of his statement about starting up
advertising opportunities for those running these channels.
Right after
this announcement, there was a noticeable jump in the value of TON, a
cryptocurrency associated with Telegram. According to market analysis by
Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView, it more than doubled in value,
leaping from $2.51 at the end of February to hit $5.30 by the start of April.
The
information reveals that Telegram's channels receive over a billion views every
month. This massive viewership allows channel owners to make money from ads
without having to pay any fees.
Additionally,
according to data from Statista, Telegram is the third most downloaded chat app
monthly, only falling behind WhatsApp and Snapchat.
To support
this effort further, Telegram now lets users buy ads using Toncoin as a new way
to pay. It's important to remember, though, that Telegram only shows ads in its
channels, and what ads you see depends on what the channel talks about.
Before they
started making money through ads, channel owners used to earn by selling
exclusive content, charging fees for joining private channels, and selling
products, among other things.
