Yahoo
decided to buy Artifact, a news app that uses smart technology to pick news
stories for each user based on what they like. Even though Artifact was a new
and smart idea, it didn't become as popular as expected. Yahoo plans to use
Artifact's smart features to improve its own news service.
The big
company was really more intrigued by the basic tech behind the app, not just
the app itself. On the 29th of March, this business wrapped up its deal to get
the app, aiming to fold its tech into their own news service. This led to them
stopping the app's use.
Yahoo
mentioned, “Artifact's tech will be key in making Yahoo News better.” Despite
having a lot of promise, Artifact couldn’t pull in enough users to keep going.
Yahoo News, on the other hand, reaches a lot of people and sits at the top of
the news chain in the USA.
Instagram’s
creators, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, came up with Artifact and were in
charge. They’ll give advice to Yahoo but aren’t joining the company. Along with
them, five more people helped start Artifact. They’re now looking for new gigs
or figuring out their next steps.
Artifact had
a tough time before Yahoo stepped in. It first showed up in January 2023 and
its shut-down was announced by its makers in mid-January 2024. They changed
their minds at the end of March, right before talking to Yahoo.
The app was
known for its straight-up screen layout, letting folks pull up news as they
swiped. It got smarter at guessing what users liked the more they used it. A
goodbye note is all that’s left on their website, and you won’t find it on
Google Play or the App Store anymore.
